New York Music Competition

Application Deadline!

The New York Music Competition (NYMC) is currently accepting applications for its prestigious musical contest to identify and award outstanding young musicians. The Competition will take place from April 18 to 21 at the YWCA of Queens auditorium. The application must be postmarked by April 2, 2011. This mid-winter break, don't let your kids slump in front of the TV all day! Instead, enroll them in YW's Mid-Winter Recess Camp where they'll explore a variety of interactive activities like creative writing, hip hop dancing, cooking and field trips to the Queens Museum of Art and the New York Hall of Science. Kids will also spend time learning how to play the keyboard and string and percussion instruments to spark their interest for musical discovery.

12% and Growing Coalition Rally

Wednesday morning on the steps of City Hall, YWCA of Queens staff and ESL participants gathered with 150 other members of the 12% and Growing Coalition and Council Members Daniel Dromm and Margaret Chin to demonstrate our growing Asian Pacific American (APA) community. In particular, the rally called upon the Mayor and all of City Council Members to allocate a fair share of the budget to the underserved APA and immigrant population. Please find the press release below with more information on APA needs and the lack of government funds to support our large community.

Asian Pacific American Community Calls for Fair, Equitable Funding

Fears Vulnerable Communities Will Be Left Behind in Mayor's Budget

New York, NY - The 12% and Growing Coalition, a group of over 40 Asian led or serving community based organizations, held a press conference today to announce their campaign to seek fair, equitable funding for the Asian Pacific American community and calls on our Mayor and City Council to protect the most vulnerable in our community - recent immigrants, low-income, seniors, women, and young people - by avoiding damaging cuts to education and health and human services.

Formed in 2009, the 12% and Growing Coalition - the first-ever such coalition of diverse Asian Pacific American (APA) community groups - brought together community members, advocates, service providers, and others on the City Hall steps today. The Coalition called for elected officials to promote equity and fairness in their budget allocations, protect the most vulnerable community members, invest in organizations that serve immigrant communities, and balance the budget by addressing both revenue and expense sides.

To achieve equity and fairness in budget allocations, the 12% and Growing Coalition is asking that the City Council as a whole increase their discretionary funding to Asian-led organizations - organizations whose leadership is APA, whose board is at least 50% APA and whose mission explicitly includes the APA community. In FY2011, the total giving of the speaker's pot and City Council funding, which includes individual youth, aging and discretionary dollars, totaled close to $50 million (Who Got What: FY2011, Gotham Gazette, June 30,2010). Asian-led organizations received $711,332, a mere 1% of the total giving. City Council directed initiative funding, such as Immigrant Opportunities Initiative and Adult Literacy, totaled $115 million in FY 2011. Asian-led organizations received $612,527 in initiative funding, which is 1% of the total.

Vanessa Leung, Deputy Director of the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families, says, "Asian-led organizations are committed to meeting the needs of the diverse Asian Pacific American community through culturally competent and language accessible services. The City Council has an obligation to support the organizations that are on the ground serving our most vulnerable community members. 1% of their total giving in discretionary dollars and initiative funding is not acceptable. We look forward to working with the City Council to increase that percentage and reach a more fair distribution of funding."

The 12% and Growing Coalition is also asking Council Members to collect and share information on services available for APA community members in each district by gathering information on organizations that include total population served, percentage of that population that is APA and the language capacity and cultural competency of staff members to serve diverse populations.

Steve Choi, Executive Director of the MinKwon Center for Community Action says, "As the co-lead of the Coalition, the MinKwon Center for Community Action feels that our efforts are coming at a critical time - our disadvantaged, underserved community members are facing savage budget cuts, while still in the midst of a deep recession. In 2011, we all need to step up our efforts at protecting the crucial services that these community members are relying on for survival. We also call on our City Council Members to join us by finding out the needs of these often-isolated community members in their own districts, and to meet these needs during these critical times."

Linda Lee, Associate Executive Director of the Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York,says, "During tough economic times, it is always the most vulnerable populations that experience more difficulties; the elderly population is no exception. KCS is dedicated to providing various social service programs to empower our seniors, enhance their quality of life and foster greater independence and productivity. Our community needs to ensure that seniors continue to receive quality services and an equitable distribution of funding towards these vital programs."

"Chinatown Manpower Project provides immigrants and refugees with vocational training, ESL classes and entrepreneurial training. Since the start of the economic downturn, CMP has seen at least a 25% increase in the number of walk-in clients, a return of former clients seeking new jobs and over 200 individuals on our waiting list for ESL classes. It is our hope that Mayor Bloomberg and the city of New York continue to support services and programs for immigrants to attain economic self-sufficiency," says Stephanie Lau, Assistant Executive Director of Chinatown Manpower Project.

Catherine Chao, Community Development Officer of the Queens YWCA, says "Cuts to women's services would have a devastating impact on not only women, but to their families and children. Women are the backbone of our community, and to eliminate or reduce funding to crucial women's services greatly affects the economic well-being and health of the entire New York community. YWCA of Queens is an organization dedicated to serving women in our community so that they have the tools and resources they need to achieve prosperity. Continued cuts to our programs will reduce the number of people we can serve... people [will have] fewer and fewer opportunities to receive the education and skill-building services for a better life because of these government budget cuts."

"South Asian Youth Action (SAYA!) relies on public funding to offer after-school programs at five sites throughout Queens. With the support of funding provided through NYC Council Member items, we reach close to 600 youth per year. In this current difficult economic climate, cuts in this discretionary funding will force us to reduce both our culturally and linguistically competent staff as well as our services to youth," says Udai Tambar, Executive Director of South Asian Youth Action (SAYA!).

Sudha Acharya, Executive Director of the South Asian Council on Social Services (SACSS), says "SACSS was created specifically to assist underserved South Asians in New York, and SACSS' major focus is healthcare. In the current dire economic situation when people are struggling to survive, access to quality healthcare is crucial. We urge the Mayor to protect these services."

The 12% and Growing Coalition is comprised of over 40 Asian led and serving organizations aiming for the New York State and City governments to have fair budgets that protect the most vulnerable Asian Pacific American New Yorkers.

For the past 31 years, the YWCA of Queens's Bazaar has become a tradition in the borough for celebrating the area's cultural diversity and uniting families in a common goal to strengthen and better our community. Proceeds from the Bazaar will go to develop and expand critical programs that many low-income and immigrant community members have come to depend on like youth GED classes and English language proficiency assistance. On Friday children from both After School and Universal Pre-Kindergarten celebrated Halloween by dressing up in fun costumes and playing Halloween-related games! UPK kids even went 'trick or treating' around the YWCA building where staffers dropped bags of candy in their buckets. Needless to say we had an energetic bunch afterward.

The excitement was felt throughout the day as senior participants entered the building hugging and reconnecting with friends after a summer hiatus. New active seniors were welcomed with open arms. "Little Voices" Benefit Concert

A BIG THANKS to all who came out to the "Little Voices" Benefit Concert last Saturday to benefit the YW-Access program! The Little Voices musicians raised $2,700 to support their peers in need of free GED education and job readiness training. Concert goers were charmed by the young musicians' renditions of classical and contemporary music, which included a lovely performance of "Over the Rainbow" from the Wizard of Oz film.

The YW would also like to thank the wonderful musicians below whose dedication to bettering our community is an inspiration to us all.

25 Project C.I.T.Y. volunteers were recently awarded with the President's Volunteer Service Award for their commitment to and assistance with the YW's Summer Day Camp program. The award was created by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation to honor those who contribute 100 hours or more of community service. Last Friday the YW held an award ceremony celebrating the extraordinary accomplishments of these Project C.I.T.Y. volunteers where parents of the volunteers were also in attendance to applaud their children.

Paul Oh, a Project C.I.T.Y. volunteer, gave a moving speech of his experiences with the YWCA Summer Day Camp at the Presidential Volunteer Awards Ceremony. We wanted to share with you his kind words:

"Good afternoon everybody. As many of you probably already know, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to volunteer here at YWCA. To be honest, I signed up for this summer day camp expecting little but after the two months, I am glad to have volunteered here and I cherish the time spent with this great community of counselors, teachers, children, and friends.

I stand before you today to discuss my experience here at YWCA. Since the first week of July, I have been working with children ranging from five to eleven years old at YWCA's Summer Day Camp 2010. Though the kids can be difficult to maintain and are quite easily distracted, I have grown to respect their knowledge and maturity that is seldom seen in today's generation of children. Sure, there have been moments where children would get out of hand, but those instances are largely overshadowed by their great display of interest and enthusiasm with the day camp. It is always fun to watch the large number of kids interact with one another, even if it's a mere game of chess or a quiet conversation while waiting in line for the bathroom.

What struck me the most about this day camp were the various cultures and backgrounds that the children had come from. I came into this program thinking I would be working exclusively with Korean-American kids, but found myself in a room full of Korean, Chinese, Indian, African-American, German, and even Nepalese children. Even the counselors that worked there alongside me were of many different nationalities, and watching them all work together made the experience truly special. Although it has only been roughly two months of volunteering, it feels as if I have known these children for much longer. I hope that through the short time I have spent with these children I was able to inspire and inspire them as they have done so to me. Thank you." - Paul

Open Casting Call for "illumiNATION"

Calling all young actors and actresses! YWCA of Queens is looking for 5-10 year olds to perform in the organization's new, drama club, illumiNATION.

Does your daughter or son have a knack for impressions? Does she set up mini-performances for you in the living room? Does he try to make everyone laugh? Or do they just like to have fun?

illumiNATION offers children a place to express themselves through creative performance. Improv! Role playing! Expressive movement! Your kids will have a great time acting while also gaining news friends, confidence and interpersonal skills. And be prepared to bust out your cameras! At the end of each semester, these young actors will star in a live performance to show off their talents.

Steps to Respect: Teen Anti-Violence Program

Did you know that 1 in 10 girls in NYC is a victim of physical violence by a partner?

Don't be a statistic!

Join YWCA of Queens' new, free program Steps to Respect to arm yourself with the knowledge to prevent partner abuse from happening to you. Through the program's monthly workshops designed for all high school aged females, you'll learn how to recognize abuse, how to protect yourself, how texting and the internet can be another way to be abused, and much more.

If you are being or have been abused, the YW is also offering a weekly support group for abused teens to know that they are not alone. This support group will help provide comfort and relief through difficult times in an understanding environment.

Take the step to respect through empowerment, confidence and strength. Don't be afraid to speak up. Say NO to abuse!

Registration is currently open to all females between ages 13-19. The program will begin in October. Members can choose to join one or both of the workshops or weekly support group. Parental consent is required. To register, call 718-353-4553.

After School Program
After School is the oldest program at the YW and provides quality care for children of working parents. Participants take part in a variety of fun and engaging activities that improve academic and social skills. Children also participate in silent reading, homework help and tutoring.

Evergreen School
The Evergreen School for seniors truly keeps participants young at heart with educational and recreational programs that enhances quality of life and actively engages seniors to be healthy and energetic. The School allows seniors to interact with one another, share mutually common interests and spend time with both old and new friends. Participants are able to take yoga and sports dance classes, go on field trips, learn Korean painting and watch performances. Seniors also have the opportunity to participate in the Y Evergreen Choir, whose singers are deemed the goodwill ambassadors of the community and the YW as they perform at various events and settings around the city.

The 2010 Summer Literacy Festival Wrap Up

YWCA of Queens' 2010 Summer Literacy Festival brought together over 300 children, youth and family members from all over Queens on Saturday, August 7th, to raise awareness and interest in reading and writing. The day kicked off with a special greeting from Councilmember Peter Koo, who emphasized the importance of staying engaged in books, especially during the summer months. The festival was jam-packed with different activities for youth to participate. For the Alphabet Soup activity, kids used different crafts to construct their name in a creative way. The puppet show entertained children with stories like "Little Red Riding Hood" and Senator Toby Ann Stavisky captivated eager listeners with her rendition of "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs."

During the popular Spelling Bee event, contestants came prepared and determined to win. In fact, contestants knew words so well that the moderator nearly ran out of words! The brand new competition Teen Jeopardy allowed youth to imagine being on the famous game show and answer trivia questions pertaining to categories such as geography, science, famous people and U.S. history. For Speak Easy, another new contest, participants tapped their creative sides to express what women empowerment or environmental sustainability meant to them. Performances ranged from speeches to poems to even a rap! Needless to say... the judges had an extremely difficult time selecting the winners.

New Board President

Chung Sook Park was elected last Thursday by the YWCA of Queens Board of Directors to serve as the organization's 18th board president. Jennifer Kang, Sunjae Oh, and Christina Choi were elected as the vice presidents. The new term officially begins on September 1, 2010 and ends on August 31, 2012.

Mrs. Park has been on the board of YWCA of Queens since 1984. She served as the 11th and 12th board president from 1996 to 2000 and served in many other important roles such as the chair of YWCA of Queens' Independence Committee, Building Committee and Gala Committee, as well as the leader of the Mother's Choir team. Mrs. Park is also an ardent supporter of the New York Music Competition for youth, Evergreen School for seniors and many other programs and services at YWCA of Queens that benefit local community members of all ages. Furthering emphasizing her dedication to the organization, every Tuesday she helps cook lunch for Evergreen School members. Her quiet yet relentless action and services make the YWCA's volunteerism vividly alive and inspirational.

Kumbok Kaye Min, the 16th and 17th board president whose term started on September 1, 2006, will finish her tenure as president until August 31, 2010. YWCA of Queens' bylaws regulates that the board officers shall be elected by the board to serve for a term of two years, and may serve two consecutive terms of office.

New Van in Action!

The Hyde and Watson Foundation and an anonymous donor provided YWCA of Queens with two grants that allowed the organization to purchase a brand new, spacious van. With the van, After School and Summer Day Camp participants can be picked up from various schools and locations around the community in a safe and convenient environment. The van will also be used for various program fieldtrips.

Congratulations to the youth participants of our GED/Workforce Development program who achieved academic and professional excellence!

Nine students recently received their GED certification and two have obtained jobs. 15 students also received the National Retail Federation (NRF) certificate that recognizes the knowledge and critical skills recipients must have in order to succeed in the retail industry.

Students have access to a wider range of opportunities with GED and NRF certification and are ready to tackle the workforce or higher education. YWCA of Queens staff and participants celebrated these achievements with a Moving Upward party and we look forward to hearing of their future successes!

Yoga Tuesdays

YWCA of Queens has partnered with Restore NYC to provide fun and spiritual yoga classes targeted at sex trafficked women. The organization is excited to work with Restore NYC, which does amazing work in provide safe housing and specialized legal, medical and employment services to this population.

We are delighted to announce that two of YWCA of Queens' board members were recently honored for their resolute dedication to the community. On June 11th, the Korean American Association of Greater New York (KAAGNY) presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to In Sook Hong, YWCA of Queens' Senior Advisor, at an event celebrating the organization's 50th anniversary. Additionally, the Korean American League for Civic Action named Grace Lyu-Volckhausen as an honoree at their 10th anniversary gala.

Last Friday KAAGNY also recognized YWCA of Queens' partnership in providing health fairs and services to the Flushing community. YWCA of Queens President Kumbok Kaye Min received the award on the organization's behalf.

Women to Work graduates and YWCA of Queens staff celebrated the last day of classes last week. The program focuses on empowering immigrant women and teaching them professional skills to succeed in today's workforce. Participants learned Basic Computer, Workplace ESOL, created resumes and gained knowledge of workers' rights. The next WTW session will expand to include seminars, guest speakers and field trips to further participants' professional development.

On June 9th, youth from the GED/Workforce Development program ventured to South Street Seaport to present the activity they have been working on this semester at the Team: Project Showcase - the YWCA of Queens Web Blog Project. The Web Blog Project is an online community for YWCA of Queens youth to voice their opinions and stay connected to the program and each other. The project has not only improved participants' typing and writing skills, but also has left a positive impact by building self-esteem and confidence.

Senior Mini Olympics

Despite being moved indoors because of the expected rainfall and for our seniors' safety, this year's Senior Mini Olympics proved to be a day full of entertainment and fun. Nearly 200 seniors gathered and participated in exciting games such as Bingo. Many also won great items in the raffle, but these prizes don't nearly compare to the old and new friendships strengthened at the event.

Special Report from Advocates for Children of New York and YWCA of Queens

On Wednesday, May 26, a report on Students with Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE) was released by Advocates for Children of New York, with contribution from YWCA of Queens. The report, titled "Students with Interrupted Formal Education: A Challenge for the New York City Public Schools," explores experiences and struggles of the SIFE population and how the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the NYC Department of Education (DOE) are failing to meet their needs.

More than 15,000 students in the New York City public schools immigrate to the U.S. after having missed two years or more of schooling, further adding to the challenge educators face in raising the 40% on-time graduation rate for English Language Learners. Advocates for Children offers the following suggestions on how to best address this issue and provide for these students:

NYSED and the DOE should improve collection of data on the demographics,
characteristics, and performance of SIFE

NYSED should review the current definition of SIFE and consider a more
inclusive definition that emphasizes low literacy and academic skills

The DOE should strengthen systems to identify and assess SIFE in all schools
and enrollment centers citywide

The DOE should undertake a review of current SIFE programming and
articulate a more comprehensive citywide plan for SIFE funding,
programming, and professional development for all school staff

NYSED should apply to use extended graduation timelines for SIFE

UPK Field Trip to Queens Botanical Garden

On Friday, May 21, the Universal Pre-Kindergarten children took a fun and exciting trip to the Queens Botanical Garden where they learned about the environment, admired the diverse landscape and drew some of their favorite sights from the day. The purpose of the trip was to enhance the children's appreciation of nature and to teach them the value of observation and documentation.

APA Albany Advocacy Day

Organized by Assemblywoman Grace Meng, YWCA of Queens and other NYC organizations participated in New York State's first Asian Pacific American (APA) Legislative Advocacy Day in Albany to bring attention to the needs of the population and the importance of social services such as ESL instruction and workreadiness classes. The event took place at the Well in the historic Legislative Office Building where New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and other legislative leaders offered their support of the APA community.

APA Advocacy Day
May 18, 2010

On Wednesday, May 18th, YWCA of Queens joined with nearly 200 members of the 12% and Growing Coalition on the steps of City Hall to advocate for Asian Pacific American (APA) rights, the restoration of key budget priorities that support the immigrant population and a fair share of the city's budget. Although the rain may have dampened our clothes, it certainly did not dampen our spirits.

The APA community makes up 12% of the New York City population (nearly one million), but it only receives 0.24% of the City's social service contacts. Together with one voice, the 12% and Growing members took a stand against the funding inequity and demanded a fairer budget that benefits a significant and growing population.

YWCA of Queens and Coalition members also met with key legislative council members to expand on the community's needs and how recent budget cuts have affected those most vulnerable.

Health Fair - Thursday, May 20

YWCA of Queens has partnered with the Korean American Association of Greater New York (KAAGNY) to offer community members, particularly those with no health insurance, free basic medical services on Thursday, May 20th from 6-8:30 p.m.

In light of Mother's Day, this health fair is aimed at raising awareness of breast cancer in women and the importance of getting screened. Exams will also be conducted for cholesterol and blood pressure levels, as well as assessing risks of developing anemia.

Medical professionals in fields ranging from Dentistry, Internal Medicine, Physical Therapy, Oriental Medicine, Acupuncture, Social Services and Psychotherapy will be on site to help out as needed.

The YWCA of Queens' 32nd Annual Gala will be held Thursday, April 29, 2010 at Dae Dong Manor. In celebratingthis year's theme, "A Healthy Community for a Promising Future," we will recognize Ana L. Oliveira, President & CEO of the New York Women's Foundation, with the Empowering Women Award and Chung-Wha Hong, Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition, with the Eliminating Racism Award for their work in building stronger, lasting communities.

The Empowering Women Award was introduced to recognize those who relentlessly mobilize women to become strong, self-reliant contributors in society.

Ana L. Oliveira is President & CEO of The New York Women's Foundation®
(NYWF). She has been a voice for change at the NYWF since 2006 and has helped catalyze partnerships in achieving justice for women and girls. NYWF has helped women and girls become self-sufficient by helping organizations sustain and remain effective through financial provisions and developing leadership and organizational potential. The YWCA of Queens thanks Ms. Oliveira for her efforts in eradicating barriers women face and providing them with opportunities to positively transform their lives.

The Eliminating Racism Award honors those who bring a stronghold in advocating for equality and social justice for all.

Chung-Wha Hong is the Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC). She has worked for civil and immigrant rights for over 20 years and has been responded to emerging issues and needs. Through the NYIC, she has organized the largest immigration rally in New York City history, attracting more than 300,000 people for a march on City Hall in 2007. In addition, she has helped win $700 million in state funds for local schools to help immigrant students who don't speak English. The YWCA of Queens thanks her work with the NYIC in securing immigrant rights and advocating for social justice.

Next Thursday, April 15, 2010, winners of the New York Music Competition (NYMC) will perform at the world renowned Carnegie Hall. The YWCA of Queens is proud to collaborate with The Korean Daily in completing the competition's 13th year. The participants and the competition have matured for over a decade to create an atmosphere that sets itself apart from other competitions. Some occurrences that stand out from this year's competition are:

· First place violinist, Ji Soo Kim, of Category D was accompanied by her pianist brother, a past winner, making this a family affair.

· Friends John Lee and Jean Kim went head to head to both place first.

· Past winners are now being accompanied by orchestras in their recitals.

This competition will continue to promote youth's appreciation of music and give opportunities for young people to showcase their musical talents.

As signs of winter are behind us, it's time for the YWCA to look forward to rising temperatures and the annual Summer Day Camp. Last year's theme, "Let's Go Green," was based on the YWCA's efforts to reduce waste and be more mindful of our consumption of natural resources. This environmental endeavor is in efforts to promote wellness beyond the physical aspects. The YWCA encourages social responsibility and in the spirit of recycling, we will be recycling last year's theme for this upcoming Summer Day Camp 2010.

"Let's Go Green" will not only be reused, but it will build on top of foundations from last year. It will continue to serve its purpose through education and practice and will prove to demonstrate that making small changes can have a large, lasting effect. Some of last year's overzealous participants witnessed what little effort it took to recycle and even tried to manage their own compost. The YWCA is encouraged by the efforts of its young members.
This passion seen in the youth has overflowed to the YWCA staff. The staff has made small changes such as purchasing postconsumer recycled paper and reusing the backsides of printed pages . This effort has even reached our upcoming Annual Gala. Invitations have been printed on recycled cards and envelopes. These small changes have reduced costs and have created a more sustaining atmosphere at the YWCA making what was old, new again.

In commemoration of Women's History Month, New York City Comptroller John C. Liu as well as 13 women's organizations, including the YWCA of Queens, sponsored a celebration for women this past Tuesday evening at Surrogate's Courthouse. The evening acknowledged significant female contributors who have improved not only women's issues, but the well-being of society. Recognition went to women from different backgrounds in the field of education, health, business, media, and for a lifetime achievement. The honorees are:

Virginia Kee, Founder of CPC,
Ethel S. Paley, Honorary Director of WCC,
Jerusha Ramos, Business professional, NL Financial Alliance
Janice Weinman Shorenstein, President of K.I.D.S.
The YWCA of Queens had the privilege of not only co-sponsoring this event, but performing in it as well. The Y Evergreen School, a program of the Center for Seniors, is one of the longest running programs here at the YWCA. This school offers response-driven programs and services focusing largely on education and recreation. Over 30 senior women bussed to Manhattan to perform two of the many songs they have practiced weekly throughout the year. The lasting expressions of pride and excitement lingered the women's faces after their performance leaving much expectation for their next appearance.

Greetings! My name is Moo Young Kim and I am the new Adult and Community Program Coordinator. When I joined the YWCA staff over two months ago, I never imagined I would visit Albany and Washington, DC to advocate for immigration reform. This past Sunday, I, a Southern California native turned New Yorker, marched to the beat of Korean drumming to join over 200,000 people rallying for immigration reform at the National Mall. We all gathered for March for America, a movement that demands immigration reform and economic justice for all Americans. For many, this first rally experience left a deep desire to pursue immigration issues. This experience gave me hope for the future. I was nowhere near awkward as the lone representative of the YWCA. I was impressed and fueled with excitement by the beauty of so many young people excited about a cause that not necessarily affected them directly. This made my trip even more valuable. This day did not serve to surface stories of illegal immigration and Latinos, as is typically depicted by the media, but it portrayed stories often neglected by the public. Family separation, newlyweds torn apart, and students forced to leave after receiving their education are only a few struggles that immigrants have faced in America. To have seen so many people of different backgrounds working in a civil manner convinced me of a promising, hopeful future.

Participants of the Job Readiness program through the YWCA of Queens' Youth Department took on job seeking roles last Friday. The group of young people commuted to Bayterrace Shopping Mall in their suits where they submitted job applications. Some even took on initial interviews with potential employers. For a few, it was a fearful experience. For some, it increased expectations and anticipation. Ms. Stella Sunwoo, Youth Program Coordinator and Career Counselor at the YWCA, serves as more than mentor to these young people. She understands how the job search process can be overwhelming and intimidating for everyone, regardless of age. By providing encouragement and guidance, young people can gain confidence of what they can offer to the work force. At the end of the day, these participants gained familiarity with the job searching process-restoring hope.

Taekwondo Belt Promotion Ceremony

YWCA Taekwondo program held a Belt Promotion Ceremony on Saturday February 27, 2010. 11 students promoted from white to yellow belt after the test. Collaborating with TKD Korea, YWCA of Queens has been providing Taekwondo classes from Monday through Saturday for children and youth since Janaury this year.
