New York Music Competition - April 18-21, 2011

It's almost that time of the year! The New York Music Competition (NYMC) is currently accepting applications for its prestigious musical contest to identify and award outstanding young musicians. The Competition will take place from April 18 to 21 at the YWCA of Queens auditorium. The application deadline is March 28, 2011. Drop by the YW or email Ms. Joanne Chung at joannec@ywcaqueens.org for the application.

Performance Genres and Age Groups*:

-Piano: For ages 7-15

-Violin: Up to 15 years old

-Cello: For ages 9-17

The NYMC Winners' Concert will be held on Tuesday, April 26 at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall at 8 p.m.

Come join us for a spiritually nourishing time as we walk through the book of Mark to find out fascinating details about the life of Christ.

Adult ESOL

Time: Morning (2 sessions/week; 4 levels, meeting on different days 9:00am-12pm)

Evening (2 sessions/week; 2 levels, meeting on Tue/Thu 6:00-9:00pm)

Improve your English language proficiency and learn about American civics and culture.

In addition to the regular ESOL classes, we are hosting two conversation classes on Mondays, as part of the WANY (We Are New York) project, sponsored jointly by the Mayor's Office and CYNY.

Ages: 18 and up

Cost: Free, but membership highly encouraged

English Bible Reading I

For Korean speakers

1/12-3/1: Wednesdays, 12:30pm-1:30pm

Instructor: You Seon Kim, Ph.D., MA, M.Div., Th.M., BA in TESOL

This class focuses on reading, pronunciation, grammar and comprehension. You will gain more confidence in your English language ability as you learn from our qualified instructor.

Fee: $60 for members

Pathfinders Adult GED (16 years old and older)

1/11-3/29: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5pm-8pm

This program allows adults to obtain their GED through an affordable and accessible community program. The program helps participants improve skills in all five GED subject areas and will be the pathway to earning your GED and building a new career.

Fee: $170 for members

Children's Chorus (4-11 year olds)

1/12-3/23 Wednesdays, 3:30pm-4:30pm

Conductor: Renita Martin, MFA, MA

Let your child enjoy the art of singing and performing with our talented singer, musician, actress and conductor, Renita Martin! Being part of this group will build teamwork skills, strengthen their overall confidence and provide the opportunity for them to express themselves through classic music.

Fee: $110 for members

IllumiNATION Drama Program (4-12 year olds)

1/15-3/26 Saturdays, 9:30am-12:30pm

Drama Therapist: Daniel Summer, ATR-BC, LCAT

lIIlumiNATION offers children a place to express themselves through creative performance. Improv! Role playing! Expressive movement! Times with our Drama Therapist will be a therapeutic experience for the children and will assist them in positive emotional development. Your kids will have a great time acting while also gaining new friends, confidence and interpersonal skills.

Fee: $290 for members

Youth Chorus (12-15 year olds)

Steps to Respect (for teenage girls)

Join YWCA of Queens' new program Steps to Respect to arm yourself with the knowledge to prevent partner abuse from happening to you. You will learn to recognize abuse, learn to protect yourself, discuss how texting and the internet can be another way to be abused, and much more.
